I love Ritter Sport: the square German candy bars combine my appreciation for quality chocolate with a a compulsive urge to collect the brightly colored packages and admire my personal chocolate rainbow. And about the only thing I like as much as eating Ritter Sport chocolate is writing about it. My review of the Ritter Sport chocolate flavors available at the time in the U.S. is one of my all-time most popular posts, and I've also written a review of Ritter Sport's seasonal summer 2016 flavors.
On last year's trip to Germany, I scoured every grocery store we came across for new Ritter Sport flavors, some of which are currently unavailable in the U.S. After a bit of a delay (chocolate tasting is hard work), here are my notes on Ritter Sport's latest and/or exclusively German offerings. Like my previous reviews of U.S. and summer 2016 flavors, the bars are rated as GET IT, YOUR CALL, or SKIP IT.
- Honig-Salz-Mandel (brown and orange wrapper) milk chocolate with roasted, salted almonds with a honey flavored coating. Although there is a hint of salt, the "honey flavored coating" was undetectable. Not different enough from the Whole Almond flavor to merit trying unless you're a big almond fan--YOUR CALL. (This flavor is available in the U.S. as Honey Salt Almonds)
- Keks + Nuss (cream wrapper) milk chocolate with crispy cookie bits and hazelnut pieces. I loved the texture of the crispy cookie bits, which reminded me of puffed cereal. The hazelnuts add a nice additional note of flavor with some crunch. GET IT.
- Knusper Tortilla Chips (orange wrapper) milk chocolate with tortilla chips and roasted corn puffs. The flavor of the roasted corn puffs (known in the U.S. as corn nuts) unpleasantly overpowered the chocolate, and the tortilla chips were undetectable. SKIP IT. (This flavor is available in the U.S. as Corn Tortilla Chips)
- Olympia (golden wrapper) milk chocolate filled with yogurt, honey, hazelnut pieces, and grape sugar. Due to the unusual ingredient list, I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, none of the flavors really pop, and the filling tastes simply like a generic sweet cream filling. SKIP IT.
- Rum Trauben Nuss (red wrapper) milk chocolate with rum-marinated raisins and hazelnuts. With a rich rum flavor, this is your candy bar if you like your chocolate with a stiff drink. Might taste too boozy for some. YOUR CALL. (This flavor is available in the U.S. as Rum Raisins Hazelnuts)
- Vanille-Mousse (light yellow wrapper) milk chocolate with a whipped vanilla mousse filling, divided into 9 pieces instead of the usual 16. The potent natural bourbon vanilla flavor pairs well with milk chocolate, making this vanilla variation anything but boring. GET IT.
- Weiss + Krisp (cream wrapper) white chocolate with corn flakes and rice flakes. This one surprised me--I'm not much of a white chocolate fan, but the pairing with corn and rice flakes is inspired. The corn flakes add the flavor punch the white chocolate needs, and the combination of creamy and crispy textures is delightful. GET IT.
I wasn't compensated by Ritter Sport for this or any of my other Ritter Sport reviews—I just love eating their chocolate, which was purchased with funds from the Tangled Up In Food research budget.
